Deep Vibe

Red Light by Gail Gregg
So the house style du jour is deep? Must be a reaction to the dry, clicking cuts of minimal, a submerged desire to be bludgeoned by the beat, the need for an authoritative jack-master, none of that flimsy plip plop bullshit in 2008. Whatever, that suits me as I often like my beats hypnotic and hearty, nourishment for the soul, so to speak; quick-fix ear candy can get kinda old.

Jamie Lloyd - May I? (Quarion Remix) (availible on Beatport) [Future Classic; 2007] (d/l)

This hypontic track contains many minimal signifiers–floatly effects, ping pong percussion, buzzing synths zip slantways here and there–but the overall effect is simultaneously deep and delicate. The breathy vocals create a nice rising and falling motion that is broken up by a clapping, swinging beat and some elegant chords. The breakdown ends with the vocal descending back into the mix filtered in a choppy way that made my stomach turn cold.

Brother’s Vibe - BV Anthem [Deep Vibes Recordings; 2008] (d/l)

Its funny they consider this track their anthem, despite its lack of many overtly anthemic qualities, it really is all about the vibe. Yet that’s what makes this track a perfect anthem for a deep house artist like Brother’s Vibe. Besides the beat, it is restrained, focusing solely on that massive thump, but by the end of the track you’ve found that you’ve imperceptibly scaled a slope of intensity that is only really obvious when the track ends and you’re left with silence. To escape the bummer of silence: mix into deep cut of your own preference (you’ll still miss the perfect bassline).
