The Random Interview With Anders Ilar

Ilar (myspace ) has been featured on RC numerous times before. His music always leaves an impression on me, wether it’s his rough and jagged techno or the more contemplative and relaxed vibes. Curious to see who’s behind these ever-changing sound constructions, I decided to ask some (quick) questions. With the freshly released (today actually) full length Sworn [Level recordings ], Ilar has once again shown that he masters not only the cold, barren and alien moods but also the very warm and affectionate angles.

Seeing as Sworn is your sixth album to date, do you have any specific, set, process when working on an album? Was it any different this time around from your previous album releases?
I consider sworn to be my fifth album, and it’s more or less a compilation of tracks produced over a long period of time. My previous album Ludwijka is the only one wich was produced as a whole album within a shorter timespan. Sworn has been in the makings since 2006 but some of the tracks are even older than that. It took me a few years to get the right tracks together to fit this album.

My personal favorite on the new album is Tomorrow never came . How did this song come to life?
When “tomorrow” comes it´s always refered to as “today”, so I’m still waiting for tomorrow. Waiting for the next step.. next day, next life… but it becomes a loop. That is life. And it goes on forever. Making the track was simply a matter of following impulses and acting on them. Trying to catch the illusion of eternity in four and a half minutes.

You have dabbled in many different styles with your music. What will we see next from you?
I always try to suprise myself, so who knows what will be the result next time I get bored. At the moment I have the urge to make more acid and deep dubtechno, but I’m also working on a few new projects with friends on guitars and vocals. I’m following the path that feels right at the moment and i’m just as curious as anyone to hear what comes next. Hopefully that will motivate me to make more music.

What’s your thoughts on playing live, how do you prepare for it and what kind of equipment do you usually bring?
I play live the same way I produce, with a laptop. I usually try to play some new tracks that I want to try out, as well as some new mixes of released material. I’d like to make more like real concerts in the future, because playing at clubs is starting to get slightly annoying. I like to present the audience with a musical journey that is maybe not best accompanied with party and beer. In party mode I much prefer to DJ.

Your releases can be found on a wide array of labels, including your very own pinesky. How does things look for pinesky, what’s the status and what is planned (if anything) for the future?
Pinesky is not an active label and there are no plans to revive it. Simply put, I don’t wanna be running a label at this time. I don’t have the money, and I think there is plenty of labels around allready.

Any shout outs or last message you want to give our readers? :-)
Well.. to start with everyone should watch the Zeitgeist movie , and let’s take it from there.

Thanks a lot for your time Anders! Now after everyone’s seen Zeitgeist, go buy yourself a copy of Sworn and enjoy a perfect spring record.

Reviews of Sworn can be found at RA , Experimusic and The silent ballet .

The Random Interview With Reboot

Last modified on 2008-04-29 06:06:04 GMT. 6 comments. Top.

I caught up with prolific remixer Frank Heinrich AKA Reboot. After a slew of fantastic remixes on many differen’t labels & not forgetting his own work on Cadenza & Below. I was eager to find out more about Reboot…

1 Your sound is very unique. Could you describe your sound ?

Yeah, lets start with the hardest question! as most artists
id have to say, that it is very hard to describe your own sound, but i can tell you what i expect from my own productions. I try my best to make my productions sound warm and organic. Always related to the dancefloor and with a nice groovy touch. Mainly i like to use hardware in combination with ableton live. That offers me many opportunities in
evolving the sound and to give it a life of itself. In my trax i put a lot layers over the next, to get a complex polyrhythmic architecture - so every time you hear the track you can find something new. At the moment im
experimenting with very reduced and less percussive patterns. I just wanna see how less it can take and still sound like me.

2 What/Who influences you in your music ?

Everything! The people i meet. The music i listen to. The moods i am in. The food that i eat and the wine that i drink. in some way it all comes together in your music. Of course i also have musicians that i respect a lot and that for sure have influenced my musical affectations. but they would be to many to name and i dont want to accentuate anybody.

3 What does the live set consist of / What can we expect from a typical Reboot set ?

I play live act’s and dj sets. When i’m Playing live, there is only a short time to present the music to the audience. So i always try to show a broad range of what i produce. Of course i do prepare my live act’s, but there is plenty of space for improving. The location that im playing is a big part of the preparation. I wouldn’t play them same liveact on a big rave that i would play in a small club. Every live act is different to the next one. even if i play with the same setup many times. That has the risk, that you have performances that are not just perfect - but in any other way it would bore me after a while. Actually, i prefer to play DJ set’s. You just have more time to catch the people and take them with you.
But in either way: I love to party and that’s what i do when i am playing!

4 Alot of producers seem to be taking the same road as you by moving away from “minimal” sounds to making more deep & tribal influenced tracks would you say this is the way forward ?

I don’t know, if you could say that they are taking the same road as i am. Most artist try to do their own thing and not copy anybody. I think that “the way forward” means, that people should take new angles of view on music. I’m very happy that the music that i love is still developing and that you can always find new appendages. So i am looking optimistic into the future. Also, i know from around Frankfurt, that there is a whole bunch of amazing talented new producers. People like Markus fix, Robert diez, Sascha dive, the whole crew from Oslo rec. and many many others. I’ts fascinating to see how we all network, share ideas, knowledge’s and how of course party together. I am very proud to be part of this movement. Frankfurt is a good place to be at the moment!!

5. If you were on a deserted island and could only take 3 records what would they be and why ?that can only be:

The Beatles - Help (…To play loud and hope…)

Laid Back - Sunshine Reggae (…For the happy moments…)

and

Paul Kuhn - Es gibt kein Bier auf Hawaii (…To realize that im fucked!!…)

6 Whats next for Reboot/ Any plans for an album ?

I’m working on a lot of remixes at the moment. the next release is for Matthias Tanzmann on moon harbour. I remixed one of his last album tracks and im working on remixes for Guy Gerber and some others. I’m also involved in two new projects. One is with Vera and the other one with DJ Meat. They are both close friends of mine and the work with studio partners is always a nice alternation for me. With DJ meat ive already finished a remix for a old Maus & Stolle
Track and it will be released on Klang Rec. this summer. Of course i am also working on own productions and i guess the next release should be in summer. I dont want to put out too many releases and bore the people after 3 or 4.
and i have plans for an album, but it wont be released before 2009. I’ve decided to take some more time to work on it.

7 Where can we find you over the next few months ?

Im travelling a lot at the moment. Highlights in the next months will be gigs in Cocoon Club Frankfurt (30.05),
Loft in Lausanne (10.05), Cadenza Night @ Sonar Festival (20.06) and a gig in one of my favourite clubs,
the Robert-Johnson (28.06). You can also see all my dates on my myspace see you there!
