Baaz - “You & Some” EP -[STHLM Audio] (buy)
Baaz first came to our attention when he released his Granular Senses EP back in 2007. After he released his EP on Agnes’s [STHLM] imprint Baaz has had a release on the slick [DeepVibe] Recordings which is run by Sascha Dive this is where Baaz would team up with friend and fellow producer Knarf Skipson on a track titled “Still Working”. Which brings us nicely up to date and on to his latest EP “You & Some”, which has also found its way on to the Swiss deep house label STHLM. “You & Some” is a solid deep house - four tracker and comes complete with an Agnes remix and again, like on Deepvibe comes with a collaboration with Knarf Skipson on the title track “Just About”.
The first time i heard this young & talented producers music i knew he was a cut above the rest. His sound just flows with great ease. A lot of producers are trying to create a stripped back yet solid structure with their music but not many pull it off like Baaz.
“Just About” is worked around a simple laid - back cool piano riff, vibrant hand claps and some very Detroit like vocal snippets. It’s quite basic but this is what makes it so catchy you don’t need a gimmick or to over complicate things this is something which Baaz & Knarf take in mind and the outcome is very good indeed.
Next up is “Clouds”, this again reminds me of early house music simplicity is definitely the key and Baaz uses it to his full advantage. Loose yet tight drums work around an airy -deep synth and some peppered vocals. The drums are more “tribal” than your typical deep house style which works and works well. A little more going on here but he still remains to keep a deep stripped back and underground feel.
“See Below” reminds me of tracks from the Happy Records era. Warm peppered vocals, tight rhythms and cool yet edgy house grooves. It glides along delicately but so deep, focusing around droning like keys a twinkling cowbell and solid house groove. The vocal is a simple spoken one with a man’s voice saying ”I Always Know What Your Thinking”. Simplistic house music at its very best.
Last up and completing this excellent package of house is Agnes’s “Simple” remix of Baaz & Knarf’s lead track “Just About”. Agnes is easily one of the best house producers out there take his alias as Slowhouse or Ray Valioso he just makes it all sound so simple yet very effective. You just need to have a listen to his latest remix for Moonpool to see this and when he goes about his Slowhouse guise you know your in for something really special! So his remix is a simple deep groove very warm and full of depth he really does make it sound easy, very early house music, very Agnes and very good.
A solid EP from Baaz & without doubt one producer you need to keep a beady eye one. Keep it locked here on RC for more from Baaz very soon…
