Catrat -”Freedom”- (Jay Haze Main Mix) [Best Seven] (buy)
Rating:

I knew it wasn’t going to be long until Jay Haze restored my faith in him but i wasn’t expecting it to be in a matter of hours. After yesterday’s post about his new album, “Love & Beyond” not being up to scratch, i had a nice surprise waiting for me in my inbox, it was a new EP from a unknown artist /artist’s by the name of Catrat. On a first listen it was like listening to some really dubby Reggae, not too far away from the Rhythm & Sound style. I did a bit of investigating or lack of it really, as all i could come up with is Catrat are 3/4 piece most probably from Germany, my sources tell me Berlin but I’m not 100% sure, & that they’ve had a record out “Freedom” on a Sonar Kollectiv best of album last year. (This i’am sure of). A year on & up pops the remixes, two of which are from Jay Haze, which we have here today.
Jay Haze’s Main Mix is the one you need to look out for, he incorporates dub & electronica perfect, putting Jah Meek’s vocals to good use as he combines them with his minimalistic style of part techno, part dub & part electronica. It’s a very good remix & shows of what Jay is really capable of. Expect this to cross over into house sets over the summer. Personally i don’t think it’s for everyone, but if you like dubby electronic music or are a fan of Rhythm & Sound then you really need to give this a listen. It also comes with a sweet dub version also by Jay & another decent remix by Kabuki, but without a shadow of a doubt it’s the main mix that will be the main player on this unusual EP.
