Frivolous - “Island Of Sanctity” [Scape] (buy)
Daniel Gardner AKA Frivolous is the long time, Canadian ”Micro House” specialist. If your not sure where “Micro House” falls in terms of a genre think on the lines of Akufen & his specialised sounds. It’s a perfect mix of many different samples, influences & genres all of which have been blended together to create one unique sound. I hear some of you already saying this sounds rubbish, well granted, on paper it doesn’t sound like a perfect match made in heaven, but try not to be too put off as i think you will be presently surprised with the outcome.
“Island Of Sanctity” (V2 Edit) is something very different to your average house track, which takes in a myriad of sounds, samples and anything else Daniel decides to put in. Including some jazzy blues, singing, micro house & even a bit of filtered house along the same lines of what the Coutu Dumont’s is doing. All this & more along with an uncountable number of samples. The track itself changes shape quite a lot one moment your in pop heaven the next the unknown vocalist is singing the blues to you then your brought back down to earth with some finely structured bass and a fine slice of filtered house. And it all works it works very well. It’s easy to keep up as it’s not fast or complicated & would probably work on a deep house floor, it would definitely give your set some spice and variety. If your looking for something a little different i can recommend this most highly.
There is also a (V3 Edit) of “Island Of Sanctity” this is much more melodic & more on par with Guillaume with the choppy vocals and the singing think “My Main Man” it’s on those sort of lines, except this is more calmer and has less of a carnival atmosphere and more of a lush summer vibe instead. To finish the package of in style is a lovely acoustic version complete with some quite sublime vocals and the sea splashing in the background, the live instruments & vocals work wonders together and the outcome is a fantastic summery song. This EP makes a very nice change and will make your set stand out from the rest, if you like this be sure to go back and look up Daniel’s extensive back catalogue.
