Herve AK - “Sorry But No EP” [Octopus] (buy)
Rating: ★★★½☆

Herve AK is a relatively new name to me if I’m totally honest i by passed some of his work by mistakenly thinking it was Herve the bassline house producer under yet another guise! but how wrong i was. This is Nicod Hervé aka Herve AK. Nicod hails from France, Lyon to be precise this is where he runs DV1 a underground club in the heart of Lyon. When he’s not hard at work running & promoting the main club scene for Lyon he will most likely be tucked away in his studio making delightful, crunchy house & techno. The piece that really caught my ear (and i knew for a fact that this wasn’t no bassline house producer) was his release on Octopus the “Sorry But No” EP. This is a real quality release & it comes with a fantastic remix from Ripperton.

The original comes at you stripped back and crunchy with a deep throbbing bass and some magic percussion, it crackles and pops all over the place as Nicod builds the track in a James Holden Esq way. It’s quite progressive in a strange sort of way, but at the same time he remains to keep a melodic out look on things, not too much mind. It’s dark enough for the later hours and at the same time you could drop it in the middle of a set to create a “stop what your doing” kind of atmosphere.

Ripperton’s remix really takes things to another level. Raphaël cranks up the wattage and goes for his trade mark build up, meandering through deep, melodic and crunchy techno this is one journey you don’t want to end. He takes you through bouncy acid like drums luscious melodic pads & a uncontrollable springing effect that will weave its way into your head & refuse to leave. This reminds me so much of Holden he could of quite easily made it himself.

A good solid EP from Herve AK & a really great remix from Ripperton.
