House & Techno for August 08
By Joe • Aug 23rd, 2008 • Category: Featured Story, Music, Playlists
I’m finding less and less time to update on the blog these days what with work and travelling all over every day I rarely get chance to write the only time i do get on the net is when the boss takes a break!. I certainly don’t get chance to update every day which I would like. However I find summer is always a slow one for bloggers, most are out enjoying the summer, socialising or on holidays. All being well we will be back to full speed in the coming weeks with a new addition to the team too. In the mean time for those of you who have mailed me asking why we have slowed down or perhaps stopped! here’s some of the best house & techno (in no order) that’s been getting the most of my attention over August.
Miss Fitz - “Colici” (Sascha Dive’s Dark Beat Remix) [Raum Musik] (buy)
Mayann Nidam better known as Miss Fitz is on the tip of most peoples tongues at the moment with some quality releases on numerous labels Fitz has proved herself as one to take notice of. Which her latest the “We Got Time” EP solidifies. Some call it tribal others call it house some call it a mixture of both whatever you class it as theres no deniying labels like [Oslo] & [Cécille] have been championing this sound all year. We Got Time EP falls on the Raum Musik label as part of the Ten year anniversary the label is celebrating. It’s a solid three tracker & comes backed up with a really good Sascha Dive Remix which i feel to be the strongest. You can stream Sascha’s remix below but be sure to use the links to check out the full release.
Justus Kohncke - “$26″ (Aaron Carl Remix) [Kompakt] (buy)
Justus Kohncke & Aaron Carl. When these two come together you can only expect great things. And great things is what you get with $26. What we have here is house meeting techno or vice versa it doesn’t really matter, anyway you have the greatness of Kohncke’s techno influences which is close to acid house but still manages to stay techno. Put this next to the amazing softness of Aaron’s house influences and you have yourself something a bit special. There is also a Robert Babicz remix of “Yacht” on the flip but this really doesn’t make the grade. However $26 is enough reason to check out this fine Kompakt release alone.
Pascal Feos - “Endless Summer” [Level None Zero] (buy)
Limited to 500 copies only (Endless Summer & Geisha) have restored my faith in driving, minimal tribal music. You can always count on Pascal FEOS to deliver & he certainly does here. Endless Summer is the record that [Cécille] need to look at before releasing anymore slap dash & rather dull percussive ”Tribal” records (Curly your much better than this). It’s driving tight beats are finely tuned, it stays light and airy but at the same time it manages to pack a punch on the floor. Just what the doctor ordered. Be quick on this as most outlets have already sold out.
Deetron Feat. Justin Chapman - “Let’s Get Over It” (Marcel Dettmann Remix) [Music Man] (buy)
This is a dancers delight I mean after 4 hours or so of pure & syncopated techno (not a bad thing) when this comes bellowing through the funktion 1 on a hazy Sunday morning its like having a little treat put in front of you. in fact its more of a cherry on the cake moment. Dettmann’s remix is a pure joy, well its pure in every sense. Rhythmic drums and some expertly crafted bass work very well next to Chapman’s Vocal “Lets Get over It” he chants in a very subdued and sub bass heavy way. Marcel’s reworking is a cracker & will be featuring in most end of year lists. Be sure to check the other remixes too one from Henrik Schwarz & a couple from Llorca. Essential pure techno at its very best.
Sascha Funke - “Mango Cookie” (DJ Koze’s Pink Moon Remix) [Bpitch Control] (buy)
DJ Koze is a techno legend everything he touches turns to gold be that the numerous remixes that he knocks out in quick succession or his own productions. This has got to be one of my favorites of koze’s remixes i mean its so good. Meandering through techno and house Koze’s pink moon remix should suit everyone from deep house heads to pure techno fiends. It doesn’t stop there either on the flip is a good remix of “Mango” by Superpitcher & Tobias Thomas. Dream on dreamer….
Kuniyuki - “All These Things” (Theo Parrish Remix Dubstramental) [Mule Musiq] (buy)
Mule Musiq continue there excellent run in form with not one but two really great remixes of “All These Things” by Kuniyuki. Mule bode themselves with quality releases only. You wont find and two bit remixes coming from this stable which this latest Remix EP only proves further. The legend that is Theo Parrish is drafted in for two fantastically good remixes there is a vocal & a instrumental. Me personally I found the vocal less dance floor and more coffee break at work listening on the old pod. happy days. However the instrumental is an awesome piece of tight jazzy like instrumentation. Theo’s “Dubstramental” is fantastic and quite an intricate live number that will find the likes of Schwarz, Giles Peterson and Ame rinsing long in to the coming months. Buy now & save disappointment later.
DJ Bone - “True To The Roots” [Sect Records] (buy)
Bone seems to be one of the unsung heroes i mean only last week I’m finding his awesome Change EP (listen youtube) which was released back in 2007! and i never remember seeing any hype or advertising for it. I’d of put money on this one slipping under the net too if it wasn’t for LWE getting the EP sent back in April thus causing huge hype & rightfully so. The No Sleep (True To The Roots) EP is a no none sense real Detroit techno EP. Detroit & Techno seems (is) a word thrown around too hastily at times i can say myself i use the word far too often but not as often as some (my local record store) anyway its a killer & timeless three track EP go here for the lowdown & read the informative discussion.
Chris Wood Vs Frank Leicher - “Geisha” [Level None Zero] (buy)
This is the flip from the earlier Pascal FEOS record i just love everything about this. Its tight and breezy almost oriental in fact it just reminds me of summer. Flowing without a care in the world expect the likes of Kaden & Ozer to be playing this one. Again it comes strictly limited.
Ame Henrik Schwarz & Dixon - “D.P.O.M.B” (Version 2) [Innervisions] (buy)
This is a WOW moment if you have seen either Ame, Schwarz and Dixon lately its more likely than not that one of them if not all have used this in their sets. Definitely a center piece for any good DJ, D.P.O.M.B. is a dance floor BOMB! Both versions kick some serious arse but its version 2 that comes in on top for me. Listen below then go out and buy. Also be sure to check out Ame’s Fabric CD when it hits shelves later this month.
Lil Tony - “Cosmic Afro Dub” [Versatile Records] (buy)
Lil Tony is a big name on the Helsinki house scene and has been for a good while. Here we have his latest and the best mix IMO on the release. The Cosmic Afro dub is good slice of building house music full of deep rhythms tight grooves and a catchy piano riff. Quite dubby with a tight low end bass this is one of those sleeper tracks that will suddenly jump out at you & one you wont be able to put down. Check out the full release by using the links above.
