Jacek Sienkiewicz - “Beacon” (Soulphiction Rmx) [Recognition Poland] (buy)

Polish DJ & producer Jacek Sienkiewicz gives us his annual techno record that’s a must have buy. Last year he thrilled us with his ”Mirrors” EP & this year he’s doing the same with the shiny new EP  -”Beacon”.  The fun doesn’t stop there though as he’s brought a friend a long to help him light the torch and keep the beacon burning bright & this friend is none other than one of the longest serving & hardworking electronic music producers still big on the scene - Michel Baumann aka Soulphiction aka Jackmate.

Jacek’s original version is a tight & fast rolling mixture of minimal beats, organic percussion and some excellent sampling. The beats roll out and the somber clarinet sample rolls in this is backed up with the sampling which i mentioned earlier, sampling of what sounds like a busy street or village with people chatting in the back ground as they go about there everyday lives. The clarinet is quite something and very moving it touches you and makes you feel warm inside & when put next to the excellent percussion it all comes together quite fantastically. The process then repeats itself as it is an extended A side of 12 Minutes to the dot.

It’s the Soulphiction Rmx which is the hidden gem here though, I mean really! it is a fantastic remix. Michel uses more of the clarinets and the street sampling (which coincidentally remind me of his own track as Jackmate - ”Mont Blanc”). He goes much deeper than the original thus giving it a somber, smoky, “live” jazz feel. Michel drops the tempo and loses the fast rolling minimal beats & opts to use the loose tribal percussion instead, which I must say works really well next to the woodwind from the clarinet, he then keeps dropping the minimalistic tribal drums and letting the moody clarinet take over and vice versa. It’s a very warm piece with a real live feel the sort you might get at a decent jazz night, all of the components work fantastically well together which Michel uses much to his advantage. A fabulous 12″ with an absolute essential remix from Soulphiction on the flip. This is one “Beacon” which will be burning bold & bright for a long time to come.
