Lowtec - “Untitled” (Workshop 006) [Workshop] (buy) (buy mp3)
Lowtec is the work of Jens Kuhn the long serving producer/DJ and label head of the fantastic Hard Wax affiliated Workshop record label. Since the back end of 2006 Jens & his (carefully selected) friends have been releasing the cream of the crop of when it comes to deep house and slow tripping techno records all of which come untitled on a 12″ vinyl marked only by Workshop’s rather intriguing printed stamp. The quality is second to none and the attention to detail is ever present. Since the beginning of the series we have had the pleasure of many fantastic EP’s from the likes of Move D, Lowtec, Kassem Mosse, & a handful of various releases where Workshop have drafted in artists such as Sascha Dive, Even Tuell, Benjamin Brunn & then some unknown, lesser named artists like Rising Sun & Da Halz. Workshop are streams ahead of most, their out put is consistent yet not over powering thus making the label extremely popular.
Workshop 006 finds label boss Lowtec back in the hot seat for another 3 track EP of the finest slow, deep and quite soulful house music around at the moment.
Untitled “a1″ is a deep, tepid and quite soulful house journey that lasts no less than 10 minutes, full of dubby basslines, a great rhythmic structure and peppered vocals. It chugs along very nicely indeed. The pace picks up a touch where he introduces a hypnotic - ticking- riff which works seamlessly next to that dubby off-side bassline which is now swinging side to side. In come some hand claps and some lovely warm -melodic keys, by now the track is in full swing everything working beautifully together like a well oiled time piece. The vocal becomes hypnotic and Jen’s introduction of some warm airy synths (which literally glide by like a sheet in the wind), work wonders next to the syncopated ticking over of the hypnotic riff and those soulful keys. It could quite easily be another track completely but Lowtec has the special touch and manages to seamlessly blend all components in together with ease. Eventually this fades out and in comes a kick & a hand clap which brings this fabulous and rather unknowing soul- filled journey to a close.
Untitled “b1″ continues with the slow, soulful vibes, this time its a male vocal which is peppered delicately throughout as the warm rhythms and off -key grooves take the track on. The structure is quite raw and more towards techno than house however the vocal, keys and rhythmic structure of the whole piece is very housey. It gets more structural as it moves on with the introduction of some metallic riffs and some generous pads which work well next to the synths and the somber keys which underpin the track throughout. The bass gets more deep and some twinkling melodies play out as a a good backing component, full of soul and great structure, this cold yet soulful house piece will have the faithful moving their feet and nodding their heads.
Last up is Untitled “b2″ this is more of a good house tool with great atmospherics and slow meandering melodies. It shuffles along as the piano plays out the atmosphere is that of calm and composure thus bringing this excellent Workshop EP to a perfect close.
If you like the sounds of Workshop 006 or perhaps your a bit of a Workshop head, well if so may I advise you to go over to LWE to check out their excellent and very informative interview with the man himself.
