Paul Kalkbrenner - “Bingo Bongo” -[BPitch Control] (buy)
Paul Kalkbrenner is one of the hardest working producers on the Bpitch roster. With 3 albums to date and a slew of 12″s tucked firmly away under his belt this techno artist from Germany has set the standard high. Always working the circuit hard it’s none stop for Paul as he moves from country to country spinning the finest techno. He was responsible for one of last years big hitters also on BPitch ”Altes Kamuffel” which sadly, didn’t really get the attention that it deserved. He seems to be one of those artists that manage to slip under alot of people’s radars. Don’t be put off by this as he releases some excellent techno. If your new to Kalkbrenner be sure to look up his extensive back catalogue, the majority of which is on Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control.
His latest is a two sided dance floor treat. The A side “Bingo Bongo” sees him leaving his harsh techno ways behind for a minute and opting for a quite minimal percussive builder. I’m still not sure whether it’s meant to be more of a tool either way “Bingo Bongo” ticks all the right boxes for me. Keeping at steady pace through out Paul takes the listener on a aural delight. The looseness from the percussion drips and drops all over the dance floor causing a raindrop effect. Whilst the percussion maybe loose it remains sturdy never losing face or fading away. There’s quite alot of patterns going on here which go off in different directions but manage to stay working together through out. I find that when it’s played on a decent stereo system is where you gain the most from this record you hear so much more. Paul shows a different side to his usual style and it works well.
