Pied Plat -”Ode To Ede” EP [Rush Hour Recordings] (buy)

Rush Hour Recordings is without doubt one of the best upfront labels for house and techno at the moment. It can boast an extensive back catalogue spanning back over 9 years this will in turn have trainspotters & music heads alike climbing over each other to get the latest copy of the freshly printed wax. This is one reliable label that’s always on the money.

One of the more recent records to come out of this well established Dutch label was the “Ode To Ede” EP by Pied Plat. Pied Plat are a relatively new group of German electronic producers that started off by dabbling in a live electro -acoustic project and have since focused their attentions on producing & DJing. The group consists of three members all of whom have important specialised rolls to play. Eren Solak is the most established member with a good knowledge of Jazz & has also had experience collaborating with uber German house producers Âme, on some of their more well known tracks too (Kuma & Engoli) to be precise. Combine this with Felix Ostens on form producing and arranging skills then bring in a specialised percussionist (Roman Schuler) and you have yourself a trio that’s ready to roll.

“Ode to Ede” is a perfect example of producers trying to recreate the Detroit sound, don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that they have it down to a T (for me the classics will always reign) but by and large they give it a good go. It’s a very well produced track that has obviously had a lot of time and care given to it, each of the groups specialised rolls feature in this track. There’s a distinct jazz feel throughout which has been met by some fantastic home grown percussion which in turn is joined together with some really great programming & is topped off with the trio’s love for the classic Detroit sound. It’s quite electronic the (old skool) way but they manage to pull it off well.

Next up is “Double Trouble” this really shifts things up a gear or two, more of a techno influenced track that will work wonders as a slow burner on the dance floor. Again the guys go for the classic approach and produce a great meandering track that heads off to Detroit halfway through. It starts quite dark and minimalistic with a consistant ear burning, wasp stinging buzzing sound, some tight drums & the quality percussion that features heavily on the A side. This is only the calm before the storm as it really shows off with the introduction of some sweet sweet synth lines thus mutating the track and giving it a huge nodding dog nod to Detriot & early house music in general. Both are real good quality slow burners that will work well, depending on when & where you decide to drop them. Incase you might have been put off as wondering whether or not to buy them. I’d buy them anyway (infact i did) and have them as back up or that ever changing secret dance floor weapon, well it’s not so secret anymore, still.
