Pikaya - “Jive” [Meander] (buy)
Pikaya are Berlin based duo Daniel Ramm & Frank Greiner who you may know from their releases on Cadenza. Their sound is something i like to tag as “minimal funk”, luscious melodies, warm rhythmic beats and lots of groove. They first came to my attention back in 2006 when “Grune Raufaser” was released. Since then they have had a couple of remixes another release on Cadenza which was of course one of last years big hitters, the excellent “Kambrium” EP & now the ”Jive” EP for the newly formed [Meander] music label.
Jive seems to be more techy and deeper than previous releases from the Pikaya Boys perhaps more of a [Perlon] sound than a [Cadenza] sound, don’t let this put you off though as this is a quality piece of hypnotic house music that will be sure to take some of you on a mystical dance floor journey. Warm pads bounce delicately of one another this is met by some micro percussion and a almost classical like synth the drums get more bouncy and the whole track starts to open up. It’s been produced to the highest standard & also because Pikaya don’t release very often, you know its going to be A+. Deep drums and some intricate layering take hold the acid drips from every place possible this is met by warm grooves, tight rhythms and some eerie late night calls. There is a lot going on but it works and works well. If you like tech - sounds but without the cheese or predictability this is for you.
