Recloose - “Maui’s Lament” -[Rush Hour Recordings] (buy)
It seems like it’s been an age since i last bought a release from Recloose. I’m not saying i haven’t bought any of his music because its been bad, far from it. I’m saying it because its been scarce, I think the last record i bought was the Isolee remix of “Cardiology” back in 2004. Yeah it’s been that long. Matthew Chicoine AKA Recloose got his music by career up & running by slipping a demo into Carl Craig’s person whilst working in a sandwich shop in Detroit. Craig liked it & as they say the rest is history. Starting way back in 1998 Matthew is one of the old skool, he first released on Carl Craig’s techno imprint Planet E, where he continued to do so for some years. His music takes in just about everything, one of those producers that when he puts out new music you buy it! even without listening to first. You know your always guaranteed a quality release with Recloose.
His latest “Maui’s Lament” sees him releasing on the Dutch Rush Hour Recordings label. It’s two sides of pure, quality house music. Mauis Lament is a really good piece of forward thinking electronic music that will be sure to put a smile on your face. The keys sit up & twinkle elegantly as if their winking at you, these are quickly joined by some electrified synths that are jagged and quite Bass heavy. The strings from the synths alone make a sublime component in this truly eargasmic piece. It has a very warm house vibe and one that tilts on funky and electro with a dash of electronic genius thrown in for good measure, in fact id go so far to say you couldn’t really put a label on this.
Flip over to the B side where you will find “Walk In Turquoise” this is more heavy with a slung back techno vibe that focuses it’s main attention on a rhythmic percussion that’s been peppered with vocal snippets of some sort of “tribal” chant. This goes very deep and has been layered to perfection a very Villalobos ESQ record (or at least one you would find him playing and be able not id for months to come). Some may even prefer this to the A side.
Quite a release from Recloose. Also good news if your a mp3 DJ, It’s available. Probably the best £1.95 your likely to spend this month.

if that was the last Recloose you bought, you missed his entire second album including the ridiculous single “Dust” which is as big of a house anthem as there has been in the past 3 years!
I know whilst i was browsing his discogs page i thought to myself i need to do some catching up. He must of temporarily gone of my radar at some point when his album was released. “Dust” does sound familiar though. Still makes it all the more exciting i have is album to check out.
dont like the bassline at all. horrible electro “farty” noise.
Check the B side i reckon you will like that, it’s on par with what Mathias Kaden / Markus Fix are doing atm
will do will do thx
