I recently gave the new Jay Haze album a quick listen before deciding if i was going to buy it or not & I’m glad i did now. He is capable of much better than this, i must say i think it’s really poor. He goes of on so many different styles it complicates the whole album making it an uneasy listen & not very enjoyable at all. Why couldn’t he have given us some more like when he collaborated with Villalobos, or when he’s collaborating under his “Fuck Pony” guise or even “Bareback”.Come on Jay we know you don’t give a fuck, but your better than this. Here’s to hoping he makes up for things by bringing some magic to the table this summer like he did last with “Free Your Mind”. With that said here’s some classic Jay Haze working with Samim under their Bareback guise. Bareback - Funky Voodoo Mama.

Marc Kinchen aka MK aka 4th Measure Men etc etc was one of the most influential players in the house scene between the early to late 90’s. Despite this it surprises me just how many people have never heard of him. Best known under his MK guise, Marc’s own music & many remixes were highly respected right across the board. so much so that he collaborated with Derrick May on a excellent remix for Chez Damier back in 1992. Widely known as the “New York Dub” or the “MK Dub” this is a timeless piece of house music that still sounds as fresh as is did back in the day. Chez Damier Can You Feel It Mk Dub.

This was a record that defined a long hot summer back in 2004.There was something about it, that when played out in the soaring heat of Ibiza’s midday sun, it would do strange things to revellers on the floor. It would take you to that place that only good music can do. For a moment everything was calm and it was like the world had come to a stand still, well everyone apart from a few hundred tucked away in a then unknown corner of Ibiza. Everyone riding the same wave as the music slowly came out of the speakers and washed across the floor taking you with it on every level. This is why Carl Craig is such a genius at what he does who else could make such a timeless track like Sandstorms

This was quite a big track back in 2001 i still play it alot to this day. It works well next to new music from the likes of Johnny d etc. Roger Sanchez goes dark and tribal on the remix under his (S-Man) guise. Making it a good track to drop. It’s safe to say that not many Djs will be dropping this or even have it in there play-list so you have a bit of originality if you decide to drop it. Good vocals from Roisin Murphy & a late night tribal vibe from Sanchez work well together. Probably one of the best thought up titles for a producing group. The Psychedelic Waltons - ”Wonderland” (S-Man’s Dark Tribe Mix)

This was the track that introduced me to Gabriel Ananda i remember buying it on the Triebstoff label back in 2004, & listening to it over and over again. There weren’t alot of producers making sounds like this back then so it was quite a special track for me, infact it still is. I remember when it got dropped at technique in Leeds back in the day a very special moment indeed. It has everything warm melodies, layers of drums and fantastic percussion, such an essential release for any passionate electronic music fan. It hit the No.1 spot in the German DJ-charts of the Groove Magazine in 2004 with just about every DJ owning a copy the fantastic Süssholz.

This was the remix that introduced me to Ripperton an absolutely huge track that takes everyone & everything on a 10 min journey into the deep & beyond. Eve by day was a significant track at its time i don’t remember there being anything else around of its kind. It would swallow dance floors whole. Bridging the gap between deep and techy sounds. Ripperton gives it such a cavernous, slow & extremely deep masterful workout that would sweep clubbers off there feet, it really caused some damage. Sounding as fresh today as it did in 2006. Patrick Chardonnet - ”Eve By Day” (Ripperton’s Lovelee Dae remix) (d/l)

I think its important to look back on music, after all there’s no future without a past be it looking back 10+ years or just a few years, it’s good to know the background of electronic music even if its just a sketchy view on things it makes you feel better if you know a little about the subject in hand, especially when your ”writing” about it. This is partly the reason i wanted to open the vaults and look back at some records you may have missed or records that just deserve some more attention. Today’s track is from 2006 i remember hearing it for the first time late in 2005 when Damian Lazarus dropped it. It made the dance floor almost grind to a halt, it was a moment for sure. Everyone was on the same vibe mesmerised & in a state of trance. There was something about this record it was almost as if you could taste the music as it washed upon the floor with a calm but eerie presence, it wasn’t until the 5 + min mark that you realise the track has vocals this was applauded by whistles and screams of pure delight everyone with smiles on faces as the sublime singing came through the speakers clear as a bell. Yes this was Jennifer Cardini & Shonky’s Remix of Far Away by Mlle Caro & Franck Garcia (d/l )

Melchior Productions - “Galera Da Bahia” (Mexe A Bunda) -[Perlon 2005]
2005 was the year that minimal techno went mainstream Circoloco had its best season to date in Ibiza and it was a year that producers took time in making records. The music was still coming through from the underground to the mainstream & it was mainly a group of certain labels that the music heads were taking notice of. This included labels such as Perlon, Pokerflat, M_nus, Crosstown Rebels etc. I remember getting excited of the prospects from an upcoming release because you knew it was going to be good. Fast -forward a couple of years and everyone thinks they can make techno/ minimal (whatever). For me this is when minimal went stale and i think alot of producers felt the same way. Joe Bloggs was knocking out minimal techno on sites like beatport, for fun the lack of time and creativity was showing and it started to get boring. This is why alot of the original techno producers have switched back to house and left it up to the 1 release label brigade to carry on. There was a time that the label was bothered about what it was producing and took time and thought about it, now its almost extinct everyone is producing and there’s far too much crap to sift through to find a decent record (in the minimal techno scene). I wish today’s music was like 2005 where the music was at a consistant high standard. Here’s a classic cut from 2005 which was massive in Ibiza, thankfully Perlon never sold out and kept there roots to making really good techno, perhaps that’s why they dont sell mp3’s because a piece of wax is more valued and the producer has taken more time in making it. Thomas Melchior shows us how ahead of the game he was with this trippy deep minimal track (d/l)

This will be a new feature from me where i delve back through the archives & bring you some forgotten music that deserves some more love & affection, after its had a good dust off. Some will be from the past few years, some will be a little older. It wont be an old skool post though. So i recently saw the Romanian dream team or the “RPR Soundsystem” as they are more commonly known as. Rhadoo, Pedro & Raresh, I was pleasantly surprised to how much they looked back within there record collections & there vast knowledge on house music, by bringing out some forgotten memories. I’m not talking Chicago house or earlier I’m talking late 90’s early 2000 these are the tracks that need some thinking about, anybody with a PC can get a list of early house music but this was different there had been alot of thought on what to play next, And it payed off most definitely. I’m bored of going out and hearing the latest beatport chart i like it when Djs mix it up a bit, these three guys certainly did that.So the record that had me going wow i remember this but can’t name it, was Eddie Richard’s - “Yeyo” from 2001. A truly wonderful tribal drum track with a great singing like chant and a quite beautiful light & floaty melody. Yeyo is Spanish for cocaine, has this track been made with that in mind? It just might well have been.(d/l)
