Pretty Face in Jamaica

Nightguy – Pretty Face [Kompakt; 2008] (d/l)

On Speicher 58, Nightguy overshadows Steadycam. The song is called Pretty Face, but the underlying tone is ominous. The sparkling effects seem to radiate beauty out of the dark like a diamond in the rough. This is a very interesting piece and another great Speicher release. It is very powerful at engulfing you in the ugly and then distracting you with the pretty.

Minilogue – Jamaica [Cocoon; 2008] (d/l)

The boys from Minilogue always find a way to make their songs pop although sometimes in different ways. Jamaica doesn’t have the bleeps and the sharp cranky notes typical of Minilogue’s recent sound (but don’t worry that sound is embodied in the b-side of the release). Instead they construct a track that stays in on one plane rather than spiraling into as many dimensions as possible. It really does seem to fit with Cocoon. I love the way the langer sort of skips at the end. PS does anyone know when their double album is due?
